The Palio of Siena

{ Tags: , , , \ May19 }

The much anticipated SIA Cup may end on the 16th of May 2010, but horse racing lovers can look towards another continent for more hoof action, albeit of a totally different style. Twice a year, Siena in Italy is host to Il Palio or the Palio of Siena, in which 10 horses and riders, represent their Contrade or city ward to try and achieve top honours for their contrada.

With the first modern Palio dating back to the 17th century, the race is a subject of ongoing intense rivalry among the contrade. For weeks leading up to race day, there is much anticipation, evident by the banquets, parades and blessing of the horses occurring. Actual festivities begin three days prior to the race, with six trial races, the assigning of the horses to the 10 contrade, as well as the Cena Prova Generale, or Contrada dinner happening. The latter occurs on the night before the race, and is an invitation-only dinner held within the contrada participating.

The actual race sees the jockeys riding bareback three rounds around the Piazza del Campo and lasts no more than 90 seconds. Fierce competition often results in horses finishing the race without the jockeys, who have been treacherously thrown off their horses during the race. No matter though, as it is the horse that represents the contrada who wins the race and not the jockey.

The two dates each year are the 2nd of July and on the 16th of August, and is something you should catch at least once in your lifetime; to witness the passionate emotions and unique traditions of the people of Siena.
