A to Z of Must-Do Travel Experiences – D for ‘Dog Sledding’

{ Tags: , , \ Jun3 }

Dog sledding generally involves a team of dogs, either Siberian Huskies or Alaskan Malamutes to pull a sled over ice and snow. A dog sled team is made up of leader dogs, point dogs, swing dogs, wheel dogs, as well as team dogs. Utilisation of dogs for travel dates back to at least a thousand years.

There are several places that you can experience dog sledding, such as Quebec in Canada, Lapland and Alaska.

One of the best places to do so is in Spitsbergen, which is a Norwegian island located in the Arctic Ocean. Because of its location far within the Arctic Circle, you will find that the sun is always up from April to August, and always down from October to February.

It’s a surreal experience, unless of course you already live close to the North Pole. Largely untouched Arctic wilderness with vast mountainous area and glaciers make Spitsbergen a nature lover’s paradise. You may also spot reindeers, arctic foxes and most likely polar bears, which outnumber the island’s population by three to two.
