A to Z of Must-Do Travel Experiences – P for ‘Pamukkale’
{ Tags: Hot springs Turkey, Pamukkale, travertines, Turkey \ Jun21 }One of Turkey’s most famous sites, Pamukkale is home to one of the world’s oldest spas. Dating back to the second century BC, people have been flocking for centuries to the hot springs, which are said to contain medicinal properties.
Pamukkale translates to “cotton castle”, so named because of its unique formation of white stalactites, potholes and cataracts.
The highlight at Pammukale are the white Travertines of Pammukale. The 200m high cliff springs are the source of thermal springs carrying a substantial amount of chalk. This precipitates down the terraced basins leaving white limestone and travertine formations resembling a white waterfall frozen in time. The ruins of the Greek baths and temples still remain up to this day.
