A to Z of Must-Do Travel Experiences – Q for ‘Queen Mary 2’

{ Tags: , , \ Jun22 }

Queen Mary 2 is the world’s largest ocean liner and one of the most luxurious. Although smaller than Royal Caribbean International’s GT Freedom of the Seas and GT Oasis of the Seas, they are technically considered cruise ships, which are classified differently from ocean liners. To get a feel of just how large the Queen Mary 2 is, the length of the ocean liner is equivalent to 41 double-decker London buses.

Queen Mary 2 was built in the style reminiscent of the golden age of Ocean Travel, when luxury ocean liners were the preferred transportation choice of the wealthy. The liner features 14 spacious decks featuring 15 restaurants and bars, five swimming pools, a casino, opulent public areas, extravagant dining rooms and the world’s first planetarium at sea.

The extravagance of the vessel can be seen in the construction, which cost approximately US$300,000 per berth to build. This ship was built to higher specifications than cruise ships, necessary for Atlantic Ocean crossings, and features 40% more steel than a standard cruise ship. The ocean liner is also more powerful, with an average cruising speed of 26 knots, as compared to 22.6 knots on other cruise ships.

The Queen Mary 2 is the true embodiment of the phrase “It’s about the journey, not the destination”. So if you’re not in too much of a hurry, why not consider a voyage on the Queen Mary 2 when you next cross the Atlantic.
