A matter of one letter was all it took for a Swedish couple holidaying in Italy to veer some 650 km off course from their intended destination of Capri to the northern industrial town of Carpi. The middle-aged couple had apparently mis-spelt Capri when programming their GPS.

They did not realise their error until they asked a staff in the local office how to drive to the island’s famous “Blue Grotto”.

“It’s hard to understand how they managed it. I mean, Capri is an island,” said Giovanni Medici, a spokesman for Carpi regional government.

According to him, this was the first ever instance of such a blunder occurring.
